Dr. Varner graduated from the University of Missouri in 1978. He practiced in Lexington, Kentucky for 4 years and then completed a residency in theriogenology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Varner has been on the faculty at Texas A&M University since 1986, where he is presently Professor of Theriogenology and Pin Oak Stud Chair of Stallion Reproductive Studies. He is author or co-author of over 500 manuscripts, research abstracts, and textbook chapters relating to horse reproduction, and has authored/co-authored textbooks entitled "Diseases and Management of Breeding Stallions," and “Manual on Equine Reproduction.” He is also co-editor of the newest edition of the two volume textbook, "Equine Reproduction.” Dr. Varner was honoured with delivering the Milne Lecture for the American Association of Equine Practitioners. He is a past president of the American College of Theriogenologists, and has been presented with the Theriogenologist of the Year and Bartlett Lifetime Achievement awards from this College. In addition to his academic appointment at Texas A&M University, Dr. Varner serves as a stallion reproductive consultant and travels worldwide in this capacity.
