Foaling the Mare Programme: Three Stages of Foaling

A newborn foal lies in a bed of straw

About this course

This course is designed for any individual involved in foaling Thoroughbreds who wish to deepen their knowledge of each foaling stage.

You’ll gain knowledge around handling mares, recognising the signs of labour, the common complications and the importance of ensuring post-foaling routines and care.

The course is ideal for those seeking to enhance their foaling skills in a safe, informed and responsive manner, covering both routine practices and when to recognise an emergency.

Three Stages of Foaling contains four in-depth modules that will equip you with the knowledge to support foaling confidently and compassionately. There's a short quiz at the end of the course and a downloadable certificate is available upon successful completion of both course and quiz.

Module One: Safe Handling of Mares During Foaling

This module emphasises the importance of understanding and respecting the unique behaviours of foaling mares.

You’ll learn about the importance of safe handling of mares that may become protective, or "foal proud," and strategies to minimise stress and ensure handler safety.

Topics include creating a safe environment, identifying potential risks to welfare, providing routine care, and keeping accurate foaling records.

Emphasis is placed on sensitive handling to prevent escalated reactions from the mare and ensuring the well-being of both mare and foal.

Module Two: First Stage Labour in Foaling

In this module, you’ll be introduced to the physiological changes that occur during the first stage of labour, where the foal positions itself for birth.

Key topics include recognising signs of first-stage labour and understanding when to allow the process to progress naturally versus when to intervene.

Safety measures, such as tail bandaging and minimising disturbances, are also covered. You’ll also will the importance of seeking veterinary support for complications, like a "red bag" presentation, to prevent life-threatening situations.

Module Three: Second Stage Labor

This module covers the critical second stage of labour, where the foal is delivered.

You’ll learn how to monitor for potential complications, including dystocia and malpresentation.

Techniques for assisting the mare without causing undue stress or harm are covered, along with recognising when veterinary intervention is necessary.

Participants will gain an understanding in aiding normal deliveries and supporting the management of complex presentations to ensure the safe delivery of the foal while safeguarding the mare's health.

Module Four: Third Stage Labour

In the final module, you’ll explore essential post-foaling routines, including treating the foal’s navel, monitoring colostrum intake and ensuring that the foal stands and suckles within the recommended timeframe.

Key benchmarks such as timely standing, nursing, and the mare’s placenta cleansing are emphasised.

Techniques for checking the health of the mare and foal and the importance of avoiding unnecessary intervention are also covered. You’ll also gain an understanding of when and how to seek veterinary assistance and how to provide early-stage support for the foal’s successful development.
